CBD Cannabutter

CBD butter can be a bit time-consuming to make, but it’s pretty easy and ultimately rewarding!

I’m using the insides of my Kush Queen Kush Hemp Smokes for this recipe, but you can use any CBD flower you prefer. When decarbing your flower, it’s generally recommended that it’s not super fine when you break it apart, but since the KQ pre-rolls are nicely ground, just keep an eye on it in the oven.

If you haven’t heard of decarbing before, in short, decarboxylation helps you get the most out of your flower. It’s not absolutely essential, in my experience, but you get more bang for your buck. I recommend baking at 220-235 degrees F for about 40 minutes, for best results. It will brown a bit, but make sure you’re watching it here and there because black and burnt flower is no fun.

When you’re ready to make your butter, make sure you add water to your pot as well (I like to add about a cup), because it will make the separation process much easier when you cool the butter down.

Keep your butter at a simmer for 50 minutes to an hour, and stir once in a while. Don’t boil it, as it not only can affect the potency of your CBD, but it may burn/fry by accident.

When you’re ready to strain, set up a bowl with cheesecloth. I’ve used a rubber band to keep mine in place.

Pour the melted butter mixture on top of the cheesecloth, and let it drain. If it’s taking a bit too long, use a spoon and aid the process by pressing the flower. If it’s not too hot for you, you can also pick up the cheesecloth with your hands and squeeze the last of the butter out.

Look at that color!

Refrigerate your butter until it solidifies, then break it apart, get rid of the water, and then transfer your lovely cannabutter to a jar or container for future usage. I softened mine for 10 seconds in the microwave to make the transfer less chunky.

And you’re all done! How simple is that? Now you’re welcome to use your CBD cannabutter in any recipes that call for regular butter! I suggest using half cannabutter, half regular butter in most recipes, as the flavor can be overwhelming for some dishes.

Unsure how much CBD is in your butter? Here’s some quick math for you!

One Kush Queen pre-roll contains 164mg CBD per 1g flower. Under ideal conditions, there is a 60% efficiency of extraction in dairy butter, so 164mg x 0.6 = 98.4mg extracted, hopefully, a bit more thanks to decarbing beforehand. There are 8 tbsp. in one stick of butter, so each tbsp. is around 12.3mg CBD for 1g flower. For my recipe, however, I used 2g flower and only 11 tbsp. butter, which results in about 17.9mg CBD per tbsp. cannabutter. If you are using a CBD flower other than the Kush Hemp Pre-rolls you can use the above formula to determine approximately how many mg of CBD your butter will have per serving.

[Note: You can also use this recipe to create a THC Cannabutter, but we highly recommend doing the math beforehand to ensure your butter is of a potency that works for you. ]

Happy cooking!
